We had one of the ugliest bathrooms ever! Our old farmhouse was built in the early 1900's and needed a lot of TLC. The house only needed a few cosmetic touches but the bathroom needed a major overhaul. We didn't have the money to hire a contractor, so my dad (who is beyond skilled at everything) and my husband took it upon themselves to get rid of the disaster of a bathroom. The worst part of the bathroom was that it was small with carpet and wallpaper everywhere. The carpet was starting to mold and actually started rotting away the floor. We took down a wall between the bathroom and laundry room to give it more space. It was a major project for us and since it was our only full bathroom in the house, we had to get it done pretty quick. The results are fantastic and I love how it turned out.

We finally completed a wood slab coffee table for our living room. It was a long process but totally worth the work. We love how it turned out so please check out the pictures of our new coffee table. When we first bought our farmhouse, it was covered in old wallpaper.... in every room. Apparently the person who owned it before us was friends with a person who owned a wallpaper store way back in the day. It took us hours and hours to get all the wallpaper off. Plus there was wallpaper placed over more wallpaper. When we finally got it all down, it felt sad to just throw it all away. I decided to take scraps from each wallpaper and photos from our restoration and turn it into wall art as a memory into what the house used to look like and all our hard work. As we get older, I find I have a difficult time trying to find gifts for parents. I feel like after awhile they have everything so I last year, I decided to get my dad a thoughtful yet delicious gift. My dad loves food and so what better gift than an edible cake!
I found the cutest old photo of my dad as a child and brought it in to have made into a cake. I had it done in his favorite colors and surprised him with it on his birthday. Don't you love that the original photo had my grandma's writing on it and it translated onto the cake as well?! I wanted something unique in our entry way to hold coats. We also didn't have a lot of room for a floor coat stand so I decided to get creative. I found a large tree decal online and decided to make my own. It took me about five frustrating hours but I got the tree on the wall successfully. We then went to a local hardware store and picked up white wall hooks and brown spray paint. We painted them brown and put them in calculated spots on top of the decal. I love how it turned out and it adds a super unique but useful aspect to our home. Our old farmhouse needed lots of touch ups and work to turn it into our home. Our house was a deep red color with yellow trim and we decided to freshen it up so we painted the whole house blue with red and white trim when we bought it. We also decided to spruce up the entry way by ending rock flower beds. We found all of the rocks ourselves around our property and created these rock beds which cost next to nothing. I added some flowers and it made our entry look much more inviting and neat.
My mom found me a really neat antique desk but I had no idea what to do with it. We live in a very old farmhouse so it fit in so well but I didn't know where to put it. I finally decided to make a place for it in my kitchen and used it as a coffee station. It fits in so well with our house and has turned into a great use of space!
For my wedding, I wanted a way to incorporate our initials into our rustic, natural theme. I bought wood letters from my favorite craft store and bought white, grey, and black paint. I painted the letters completely white first then with a craft brush painted on black and grey marks to look like a birch tree. They ended up turning out great and added personal touches to our wedding for being an inexpensive craft project.
I am not an expert cake decorator at all but I always have fun trying new things. I came up with an easy way to use sprinkles to decorate cakes in different shapes and themes. All I did was cut out a pattern using regular printer paper. I then laid the stencil on the cake and simply sprinkled over the cut out. They are not the most ornate cakes ever but everyone loved how they turned out.
My husband and I have both coached several sport's teams for the last few years. With coaching come banquets which means gifts for the players. I wanted to do something personal yet inexpensive. This is what I came up with for our boys' basketball team this year. Gifts for SeniorsI wanted something that would be special for the Seniors on the team. I looked into buying autograph frames but they were pretty expensive so I figured I could make them myself. I decided to find an 8 by 10" frame and create the same effect as autograph frames. I found basic black frames and then bought some nice white scrapbook paper. I printed the photos in 5 by 7" and trimmed them down a bit. I then bought our school color markers for the students to sign. The seniors loved them and they are a great keepsake. Sporty Collage FrameTo celebrate the team's season, I made a photo collage on my phone of the team's success throughout the season. The collage was done just using a basic photo collage app on my Iphone. I then printed out the collage and used scrapbook paper to make a nice sporty look. I bought 5 by 7" plastic photo frames for under $1 each frame and put the photos in the frames.
This was a really cheap but thoughtful gift for each player. |
